Time is both standing still and flying by! I feel like I am so far from being done with the first trimester, but in the same breath I want to say that time is speeding by and I can’t seem to get a handle on it. There are a couple things contributing to this.
1. The Wait! I had my first OB appointment to confirm our pregnancy on July 13. We did urine tests and blood work, and talked about family history and lifestyle. Had to make sure I was living a pregnancy safe lifestyle! Our first actual ultrasound, though, wasn’t until yesterday– July 29!
2. Needing extra time! Before we found out we were pregnant (or that I’d be getting a promotion at work!) we booked a trip to New York City for our summer vacation. We are booked to fly out July 30 and won’t be returning home until August 3. While I am very much looking forward to this trip the timing is now slightly inconvenient since I just started in a new position at work, and being 7 weeks pregnant when we leave means our trip will be sprinkled with nausea, vomiting, extreme fatigue, and a lot of bathroom trips! Regardless, I know we will have a good time but I definitely feel like I could’ve used a little buffer between my BFP and our family vacay!
I have to say, the first trimester is a really emotionally taxing time. Especially if you had hoped to reach out to forums and websites for the support of others in the same week of pregnancy as you. The internet is full of stories of miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, molar pregnancies, and even second trimester losses. While these complications and losses definitely do happen it is not something I want to read about right now!
It’s hard to understand why the doctors don’t pay much attention to you in the first trimester of pregnancy. You’d think with it being such a fragile time for baby you’d get more care and attention to make sure everything is ok, but that’s not the case. The way my OB described it is they just let you “fly solo” for the first trimester, and then once the second trimester comes around you’ll start being seen monthly.
The reality is, though, that unfortunately the majority of first trimester losses and complications are caused by things out of both the doctors and the mother’s control. So, even if your doctor was seeing you monthly – if a loss was going to happen there would be little they could do to stop it.
Our prayers were answered though, and little baby is alive and well with a heartbeat of 131 beats per minute! Definitely the cutest little blob I have ever seen in my life, and I feel blessed beyond belief. So excited to leave for vacation as a family of FOUR!
