One thing I noticed early on after Lincoln was born was the frequent questions I got from friends and family, as well as strangers who struck up conversations when Lincoln was with me. They are typically in the same order:
1. How old?
2. What's his/her name?
3. Is he/she sleeping yet?
This is third question is the real kicker. It reminds me a lot of how adults frequently get asked "How are you?" As if saying anything other than "Well" or "Fine" is typical. I don't know when sleeping through the night started being a measure of how well your baby is doing, but I think it's silly. They're infants for pete's sake! They wake up, they poop during the night, they get hungry, and sometimes they even just feel lonely and want their parents to come comfort them.
Lincoln happens to be a very poor sleeper. We are talking waking up every 60-90 minutes! It's gotten slightly better now as we are approaching 11 months old, but we are still up a handful of times overnight. So, when I get asked "Is he sleeping yet?" I get some shocked faces when I respond honestly. No, no he's not sleeping yet! You know what he IS doing though? Standing unassisted, walking, saying Mama and Dada, feeding himself, waving hello and goodbye, and growing right on schedule. So, I can assure everyone he's just fine. He just so happens to require attention at night.
Now, please don't miss understand my comments here. I would love if he slept through the night. Really, I miss sleep. However, I'm not going to sweat the small stuff and I'm doing my best to enjoy this stage in his life. Good and bad.
With that - please enjoy some cute photos of Lincoln snoozing away because you all know... if he's not waking up I'm going in his room to check on him because I'm crazy and anxious all the time.
